Mount Raung Trekking in East Jawa 04 Days 03 Nights Expedition

Raung is one of the most active volcanoes on the island of Java in Indonesia.

It is located in the province of East Java and has a 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) wide caldera suhttp://lombokmarine.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=2442&action=editrrounded by a grayish rim. The difference in color of the rim and the flanks of the volcanoes is caused by the rim’s lack of vegetation compared with the healthy and extensive vegetation on the flanks. Raung, standing almost 3,332 metres (10,932 ft) above sea level, is the tallest volcano of this cluster. Although the valleys between the major volcanoes boast fertile, ash-enriched soil for agriculture, available land is very limited. Raung contains centres constructed along a NE to SW line, with Gunung Suket and Gunung Gadung stratovolcanoes being located to the northeast and west, respectively.
Eruption of 1913.

Its earliest recorded eruption was in 1586 which resulted in fatalities; between 1586 and 1817 five more deadly eruptions were recorded.

Mount Raung  is a unique and big mountain in Java Island. Its uniqueness is found in its kaldera whose depth is 500 , which is surrounded by many small peaks which give us enchanting scenery.

The easiest way to reach mount Raung is from Bondowoso. From Bondowoso we can take a mini bus to Sumber Wringin through Sukasari village. Start the trekking from Sumber Wringin through pine forest and coffe to ‘Pondok Motor’ (climber post) in which we can meet the key keeper named Mr. Serani (he death). We can take a rest there to prepare ourself for nine hours climbing to the peak of Mt. Raung.

Climbing to the peak, we will pass through coffe plantation, pine and Casuarina trees, before reaching the camping ground. For about 1 hour we have to go on sedge and then another 1 hour on sandy and stony path to the peak of Mt. Raung. It will take 7 hours to return to Sumber Wringin village. Raung is 3,332 m high above sea level where strong wind often blows. There is another higher peak, but there is still no way to reach it, as it is a dense forest.

As there is no water on the way to Mt. Raung, you better have sufficient water prepared from sumber Wringin or Sumber Lekan.

Gunung Raung has the largest crater (2km diameter) in Java. Reaching Puncak Sejati, the highest point of Gunung Raung, is difficult – although there have been several successful attempts recently, approaching the mountain from the south. It is Java’s most challenging peak by far, and rock climbing/scrambling skills are needed, although just reaching the crater rim is fairly straighforward. Below is some information from a Java Lava forum regarding how best to tackle the tricky top itself.

In fact, to reach the real peak of Raung (3332 M) will take about 5 days through the southern access. The normal route from Sumber Wringin only takes 2 days, but You can only reach the lower rim of the crater with the altitude of 3180 M above.

Trekking:

Bondowoso – Sumberwringin, 1hour. We can report our arrival to Sumberwringin shelter and proceed by taking a ride to starting point of Raung climbing post, Pondok Motor, half hour. From Pondok Motor start hiking to Pondok Sumur, 2 hours. Afterward, there are two posts before the summit and it requires about 4-6 hours to go there. From the last post to the summit, it still needs 1-2 hour climbing. From here we can make a camp and continue in the following morning at 5 am to see the sunrise on the summit.

Overall time needed

Sumberwringin – summit of Raung 12 hours
Pondok Motor – summit of Raung 7-9 hours.

Trekking Itinerary 03 Days 02 Nights Mount Raung East Jawa

Day 01 : Airport-Sumber Waringin Vilage
Pick up and meeting services at Juanda Surabaya Airport, Directly by our air condition car transfer to Sumber Waringin village and overnight at local homestay. ( D )

Day 02. Mount Raung Trekking (B,L,D)

in the morning after breakfast we start the Trek until Demit Hut Camp, this route will be across virgin forest in java. Overnight in tent

Day 03: Explore The Summit mount Raung – Sumber Waringin (B,L,D)

early morning trekking to summit region of Raung and explore the Summit and see the Big Crater with still smoke going up and hike back to village. Overnight in the Homestay in the Sumber Waringi Village.

Day 04: Sumber Waringin – Surabaya (B)

After breakfast, we drive back to Juanda Surabaya airport to catch your flight for your next destination.
